Dan Barasch shares his dream on building the first underground park in New York City. In this TED Talk he explains how and why he wants to build an underground park in NYC. Barasch starts off his talk with a little history of his grandmother and siblings coming to America from Italy when they were younger. He talks about how they were building new lives there and literally building the city of New York. This soon ties in with why he wants to build a park. Dan then starts to talk how he wants to create the park by using a location underground that was once used as a trolley terminal back in the first half of the 20th century. He explains how this underground area can be transformed into a totally green park by using a system to draw natural sunlight down below. This park received its name the Lowline because of the similarity it shares with the well known High Line in New York City. Barasch tells us that this project could be a chance for our generation to reclaim the land we have and creating a beautiful, green community along with it. Since some of our ancestors helped build the city of New York, we should enhance it with our new creations to make them proud of us. Just like were thankful for them building the place many people live their lives today.
This idea of an underground park is a very interesting one. When visiting New York, High Line was a great place to have a walk with it running almost one and a half miles above the busy streets of lower Manhattan. I think that having a similar park underground would be a great addition to the above ground High Line. I remember visiting the Chelsea Market which is sort of an underground market located just at the south side of the High Line and what struck me was the uniqueness of the market. It was something I had never seen before and they also offered great food that most likely could not be found anywhere else. A Lowline park would enhance the experience of any visitor to New York as well as the lifestyle of the natives of that neighborhood.
Not only did I learn about creating an awesome park underneath New York City, but I also learned that we should be proud on past ancestors who helped build a city or another place. That's why we should reclaim the land we have right now, and create something beautiful that we'll be proud of.
