In this TED Talk Stefon Harris shows us, he plays most of the time with his bandstand. He doesn't even know what to play at first, so he plays the music that was presented before he started his TED Talk. It's a smooth, connected line of notes which then builds up. The rest of the bandstand tries to figure out how they would fit into the music. After a couple of minutes, everybody is playing and it finally sounds like a full band. It's amazing on how they can just come together like this without even rehearsing anything before hand. Stefon then starts to talk about mistakes in the bandstand. When someone makes a mistake, it was a mistake that nobody reacted to. Stefon tries to play a brand new melody when he hears the mistake to make it sound like there was no mistake. This is when somebody has reacted to the mistake to make the music not sound wrong. Stefon then talks about how this concept could relate in our lives. He says that we should accept one another's ideas instead of bullying our own ideas. It creates a more organic and flowing feeling.
I enjoyed watching this TED Talk because I'm a member of the Jazz Band at West Orange. We don't usually all start to improvise and just all come together like how Stefon did with his bandstand, we have specific music we have to play with correct keys. But in relation to the TED Talk Stefon presents to us, some pieces of music have key changes. Once there is a key change, everybody in the band reacts to it. This kind of ties into Stefon changing his melody when the piano player plays a different key that sounds different than the key before. When someone in jazz band doesn't react to the key, they would sound like a mistake because it doesn't fit in with everybody else. Individuals in the band have to listen to each other to create a better flow in our music to make it sound great.
Stefon Harris' TED Talk was not only very entertaining, but was a great lesson on how to accept others, instead of thinking it's all about you. Accepting others not only playing a different note to create a new idea, but in a real world situation when somebody shares different ideas to you. We can't keep bullying our ideas and make everything our own, we must share each others ideas to create a better flow in our lives.
