This TED Talk that is presented by Brian Dettmer is called "Old Books Reborn As Art". In his talk Brian shares to us his art he creates out of books, pretty self explanatory in the title. He also explains some of the meaning to his art.
Brian Dettmer is an artist and his preferred form of art is cutting up books. Brian creates art sculptures out of old books and explains his process in this video. He takes the book then applies a thick varnish to the point where it seals the edges of the book to create a skin while keeping the pages inside loose. Then Brian would start to carve into the book and remove unwanted things and keep the things he want right where they were in the book originally. Dettmer likes to think of his work as some sort of remix since he's using the work of another person to create his. After that he begins to explain that in our fast changing world the book will never die, but instead will evolve along with us. It's hard to say what it will evolve into but Dettmer says how excited he is to see how it will evolve and what new pieces of work he can create along with it.
I think that Brian Dettmer's work is really interesting. As I was watching this video I was completely amazed at how he took ordinary books and carved them into something totally different even though nothing inside the book did not change. When he began to explain how he manipulates the shape of one or more books to get a different outcome it was so interesting to see the process in doing so. I also have to agree that the book will never actually die out but it won't be the same like they used to be. I actually still like to buy physical books to read for fun but I most definitely would not buy an encyclopedia or dictionary since I can find a majority of that information online. I believe that some types of books like dictionaries and encyclopedias will transfer to the digital world but books that are read for fun will still be around for a long time.
